Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome (also known as Irlen-Meares Syndrome or Visual Stress), is caused by neurological factors and is often not diagnosed since it is not normally detected by standard tests performed by an Optician in the United Kingdom and in many other parts of the world.

There is a subtle distinction between the way Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome affects Dyslexics and Autistics. In general Dyslexics have problems seeing text on a page whereas Autistics have problems with information overload from their vision but can read. However both groups can be helped by coloured lenses.
